Doctors at New York University (NYU) Langone Health, an academic medical center, reported on Wednesday that they had successfully transplanted two genetically modified pig hearts into recently deceased patients. The xenotransplant procedures were performed on June 16 and July 6 at NYU Langone, according to a team announcement. The hearts were obtained from pigs that had undergone 10 genetic alterations, including four porcine gene knockouts to prevent organ rejection and aberrant development. This is in addition to six human transgenes (knock-ins) to enhance the expression of proteins that regulate essential physiological pathways that can be disturbed by pig-human incompatibility. Bishop Mohammed Williams Naga, the Borno State chairman of the Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN), has denied ever promoting Senator Kashim Shettima as the ideal candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential running mate in the 2023 elections. Reacting to the story that was making the rounds in Maiduguri on Monday evening, the CAN chairman denied making any commendation or issuing any statement to any journalist, noting that the alleged endorsement was lifted from an interview he gave to some journalists on April 3, 2017, while Senator Kashim Shettima was governor of Borno State. He expressed surprise that a famous professional journalist would misappropriate such an interview, portraying it as if it had been granted on Monday, July 11, 2022. As a result of the unwholesome situation, Bishop Naga stated that he has called a meeting of all CAN representatives in the state as well as the national body for Tuesday, July 12, 2022, following which CAN will publish a statement on its position on the development. "On Monday, July 11, 2022, I did not interview anyone." "It was devious propaganda aimed at gaining cheap popularity on my character," Bishop Naga claimed. The Christian community in Maiduguri was previously in disarray following the alleged endorsement of Senator Shettima, the immediate-past governor of Borno State and Senator representing Borno Central in the National Assembly, as the running mate of the APC presidential candidate in the upcoming 2023 general elections, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
