Former SGF Boss Mustapha Sets Record Straight On Buhari’s 2015 Presidential Victory

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, in the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, Mr. Boss Mustapha, has dismissed insinuations that any particular leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, single-handedly made Buhari president in 2015. Speaking at the unveiling of the book, “According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience”, written by Garba Shehu, Mustapha said Buhari already had over 12 million existing votes and that the merger of the legacy parties brought in three million votes.
Buhari’s Contributions to National Development
Mustapha highlighted Buhari’s contributions to national development, noting that his integrity, national stature, and disciplined messaging were central to the APC’s breakthrough in 2015. He explained that the merger of parties in 2013 was crucial to presenting a united front and paving the way for Buhari’s presidency.
Tinubu’s Claims Downplayed
This stance downplays claims made by President Bola Tinubu in June 2022, where he asserted his unparalleled contributions to Buhari’s presidential victory and his role in nominating Professor Yemi Osinbajo as Buhari’s running mate. Mustapha’s comments suggest that while Tinubu may have played a role in the APC’s formation, Buhari’s existing voter base and the party merger were more significant factors in his electoral success.
At the event, President Tinubu, represented by Senator George Akume, emphasized that nation-building is a relay, with each administration building on the efforts of its predecessor. Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration would consolidate and strengthen the reform-oriented path initiated by Buhari.
The book launch featured dignitaries, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and several ministers and appointees of the Buhari administration. General Yakubu Gowon, former Head of State, praised Buhari’s efforts to resolve Nigeria’s complex challenges and urged Nigerians to support the Armed Forces in their fight against insurgency.
The event highlighted the importance of understanding the past to move forward purposefully as a nation. By documenting their journey and learning from their experiences, Nigerians can build a more resilient, just, and inclusive society.
