:A Betrayal of Trust: The Dark Side of Oyedepo’s Institution

In a shocking turn of events, Covenant University has been accused of treating its former employees with utter disregard, leaving them to suffer financially and emotionally. One former employee, Professor Joseph Olugbuyiro, recently passed away after being terminated from his position in September 2024, along with others, citing the need to reduce the wage bill.

The university gave its former employees a mere three weeks’ notice to vacate their residences, threatening forceful ejection if they failed to comply. While termination of employment is a common occurrence in any organization, what followed was nothing short of appalling. Months have gone by, and Covenant University has refused to pay its former employees their terminal benefits, leaving them to struggle in these hard times.

The deceased professor’s colleague shared a heart-wrenching account of their plight, revealing that the university has been devising ways to cut down on the entitlements they worked tirelessly to earn. It’s been over eight months since their termination, and the organization they dedicated a significant part of their lives to seems to care little about their well-being.

In a final conversation between the two colleagues on May 4, 2025, they shared their struggles in the face of Nigeria’s current economic challenges. Little did they know that death was lurking around the corner, robbing one of them of the chance to see justice.

The colleague’s emotional tribute to the late Professor Joseph Olugbuyiro ended with a stern warning: “I am sure Covenant will now call your next of kin and pay him/her what they like and not what you are entitled to receive. God will judge the wicked!”

This incident raises serious questions about Covenant University’s treatment of its employees, particularly those who have dedicated years of service to the institution. As the news of Professor Olugbuyiro’s passing spreads, many are left wondering if the university will finally do the right thing and settle the outstanding benefits owed to him and his colleagues.

The situation serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities faced by many workers in Nigeria, where job security is often precarious, and employers may prioritize profits over people. As the nation grapples with economic challenges, stories like this highlight the need for greater accountability and compassion in the work place

As for Covenant University, only time will tell if they will make amends for their actions and treat their former employees with the dignity and respect they deserve.
