SERAP Tells Atiku, Tinubu, Obi, and Others to Publish Their Assets

TheĀ Socio-EconomicĀ RightsĀ andĀ AccountabilityĀ ProjectĀ (SERAP)Ā hasĀ urgedĀ presidentialĀ candidatesĀ inĀ theĀ nextĀ electionsĀ toĀ makeĀ theirĀ holdingsĀ andĀ liabilitiesĀ publicĀ asĀ soonĀ asĀ possible.

ItĀ alsoĀ urgedĀ candidatesĀ toĀ openlyĀ commitĀ toĀ rejectingĀ vote-buyingĀ andĀ electoralĀ briberyĀ beforeĀ andĀ duringĀ theĀ electionsĀ inĀ anĀ openĀ letterĀ toĀ theĀ candidates.

“WhileĀ thereĀ isĀ noĀ constitutionalĀ requirementĀ forĀ presidentialĀ candidatesĀ toĀ publishĀ theirĀ assetsĀ andĀ liabilitiesĀ priorĀ toĀ elections,Ā doingĀ soĀ wouldĀ demonstrateĀ thatĀ youĀ canĀ standĀ upĀ forĀ transparencyĀ inĀ assetĀ declarationĀ byĀ publicĀ officersĀ ifĀ elected,”Ā SERAPĀ wroteĀ inĀ aĀ letterĀ datedĀ JuneĀ 11Ā andĀ signedĀ byĀ KolawoleĀ Oluwadare,Ā itsĀ deputyĀ director.

“It is a public trust to hold a public office.” As a result, voters have a right to know what presidential candidates will do if elected on issues of public concern, notably in terms of integrity, selflessness, openness, accountability, human rights, and the rule of law.

“As you and your parties prepare for presidential election campaigns, we hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to addressing these critical public-interest issues by immediately disclosing your financial assets and rejecting vote-buying, intimidation, and harassment.”

Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party are among the candidates mentioned by SERAP (NNPP),
