The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged presidential candidates in the next elections to make their holdings and liabilities public as soon as possible.

It also urged candidates to openly commit to rejecting vote-buying and electoral bribery before and during the elections in an open letter to the candidates.

 

“While there is no constitutional requirement for presidential candidates to publish their assets and liabilities prior to elections, doing so would demonstrate that you can stand up for transparency in asset declaration by public officers if elected,” SERAP wrote in letter dated June 11 and signed by Kolawole Oluwadare, its deputy director.

“It is a public trust to hold a public office.” As a result, voters have a right to know what presidential candidates will do if elected on issues of public concern, notably in terms of integrity, selflessness, openness, accountability, human rights, and the rule of law.

“As you and your parties prepare for presidential election campaigns, we hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to addressing these critical public-interest issues by immediately disclosing your financial assets and rejecting vote-buying, intimidation, and harassment.”

Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party are among the candidates mentioned by SERAP (NNPP),
