Senator Ademola Adeleke emerged as the state’s governor-elect last Saturday, less than 30 years after his elder brother, Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, held sway as the state’s first executive governor, establishing the family as one of the political dynasties in South West and indeed Nigeria.
According to Global News Nigeria, Senator Adeleke’s victory marks the second time in 30 years that the Adeleke family has produced the governor of Osun State.
However, the family’s political path did not begin with the brothers. Senator A. Adeleke, an Ede native, was elected to the National Assembly as the Senator for Oyo East on the platform of the now-defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in the 1979 election.
So it was not surprise that his scions would follow in his footsteps, ruling the political region known as Osun State, which was eventually created out of Oyo State.
By the end of the Third Republic, an Adeleke would reappear on the political stage. In 1992, Senator Isiaka Adeleke was elected governor of the newly formed Osun State. He was a member of the state’s dominant party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP). That republic, unfortunately, was cut short.
Adeleke had returned by the turn of the current political dispensation. On the ticket of the PDP, he was elected senator representing Osun West in 2007. He was re-elected to the same seat in 2015, this time on the APC platform. Senator Isiaka Adeleke passed away n April 2017 as a serving Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District.
Senator Ademola Adeleke, his brother and now governor-elect, was elected to succeed him in the Red Chamber. Although he barely lost the governorship election in 2018, his second try resulted in him making political history in the state and reaffirming the family’s political legacy in the state.
It is also worth noting that in the Osun West Senatorial District, only the Adeleke dynasty of Edeland has been elected governor.
The election of Ademola Adeleke as governor-elect is a fulfillment of the Osun West Senatorial District’s demand for the governorship seat in Osun State, whose people had grieved over purported denial of the seat.
