Some few years back, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) headed by the highly revered Pastor E. A. Adeboye was renowned to be a political church where many Nigerian politicians including past presidents visited for spiritual power and prayer. The current president was not, however, left out in this norm as he had been there on several occasions to pray for reasons best known to him.
But, presently a storm is raging over the matter of one of the staunch members of the church, Professor Yemi Osibajo who happens to be the preferred running mate to General Mohammadu Buhari of the APC in the forthcoming presidential election. The Ifewara-born man of God is reported to be angered with comments storming the media that he was the first person to congratulate the former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State.
The statement really infuriated the quiet and easy-going man of God because he never allows himself to be used by politicians even though he prays for them and has them as his church members. He was reportedly surprised to learn that his name is attached to such sensitive political and national issue that may cause enmity between him and his many followers.
In our usual act of investigative journalism, Global News got a report from a source who is very close to the pastor and also a senior pastor in the RCCG who anonymously said, “The G. O. is a father of all and who should not be seen as being partisan. Don’t forget that RCCG members cut across all strata of the society, be it politics, business and other endeavours of life. And now that they are saying that Pastor Adeboye called Osibajo to portray him in good light is just funny. To many of his members he would be seen as being partisan and that we do not wish to happen in the RCCG.”
This magazine further learnt that the custom of politicians coming to kneel down before Pastor Adeboye will no more be welcome because of the implication and the dirty images it is gradually giving the church. “Mind you, the president who is a PDP member is the president of the country while Prof. Osibajo who is the running mate to Buhari is a spiritual son of Pastor Adeboye having been attending the church as a committed member for years. The Redeemed Christian Church of God, however, would want to distance itself from politics or sending conflicting information to the general public and we still maintain that the RCCG is a church of God and not an arm of any political party,” he said.
However, political observers believed that the choice of Osibajo as the running mate of Buhari may be a well-planned one by the national leader of APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu who strongly believed that the Redeemed Christian Church of God has the largest membership in the country’s Christendom and Osibajo being one of them would surely draw a huge crowd of voters for the election to add to Buhari’s supporters.
