The joy of every father is to see all his children doing fine and great. There is also a Yoruba proverb that says that if those close to one are doing good, one will be impressed; this much cannot be said about the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, as the pastors and many members of his church are not only spoiling the name of his church but also dragging Christianity along with them into the mud.

The man generally referred to as Daddy GO by his numerous congregation, we gathered, is not happy, and this is due to the fact that the church’s name has been brought into the news several times all because of reason that are not godly. And with the effort the man is putting into making sure the church is run the way it is supposed to be and the fact that of all the times the church’s name had come up on issues like this, it always has to do with one pastor or the other and this we were informed makes the man of God very sad.

Recently, the country was agog with the news that Pastor Adeboye was poisoned and before that there have been so many attempts on the life of the GO over issues that have to do with the time he will vacate the office of the general overseer. It was so bad that pastors of the church were reportedly going fetish just in order to kick the revered man of God out of office. It started some years back when he was poisoned, an experience he narrated in a sermon where he said he thought it was time to choose his successor before God restored him and informed him it was not yet his time to die.

An interpreter was also kicked out because he was caught with fetish substances. Apart from this, the church pastors have been enjoying front pages because of their increasing immorality. Pastor Timothy Akanni was a regional pastor of the church, and he died in a plane crash in 2006, after which his real identity came to the fore front. A battle which later ensued over his estate revealed that Provincial Pastor Akanni was a bigamist, married to two wives who did not even know about each other until after he died. The pastor who was until his death, a director with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was also discovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to have stashed away in some 23 different banks stolen money totaling a staggering seven billion naira.

Pastor Akanni may not have been the only one declared to have meddled with government funds, others in the church had at different times in the recent past been linked to the church with different fraud cases listed against them and it cut across all spheres of life from banking to manufacturing and all others but the most prevalent is the issue of adultery which is taking the forefront among the many atrocities the pastors of the RCCG are committing.

A pastor of the church at Enerhen area of Warri, Delta State, reportedly set himself ablaze to escape the shame of his illicit affair with a lady simply identified as Rose who was a member of his church choir. The pastor, identified as Pastor Celestine Obaleme was married and had a two-month-old baby from his wife of two years before he started sleeping with Rose who later became pregnant for him and when all his entreaties for her to abort the pregnancy fell on deaf ears, his offer of N2 million cheque was even said to have been rejected by her and all these it was said forced him to set himself ablaze.

Another pastor of the church, Pastor Rogers Abraham, a senior parish pastor of Canaan Land Parish in Madrid, Spain, who was also the national coordinator of RCCG in Spain, was said to be fond of having extramarital affairs with singles in the church and he met his Waterloo when  one of the ladies he has been sleeping with recorded a conversation he had with her on phone. Besides adulterous acts, Abraham, 51, from Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital was found to have squandered large sums of money meant for the church in Spain and he was afterwards expelled by the church.

In the same vein one of the GO’s deputy, Pastor J. A. O. Akindele was also alleged to have impregnated his secretary. The lady in question had been with the highly respected pastor for about six years as his private secretary. Sources revealed that the girl was forced to relocate to Ibadan when the pregnancy started becoming obvious. Though the whole issue is still being discussed in hush tones as the genuineness of the whole thing could not be ascertained, it is taken to be the truth as such acts are gradually becoming a normal thing in the church.

Recently also the decision to force Pastor Gandhi Olaoye, the pastor of Jesus House Parish, Washington DC to step down over what is not revealed but which people attributed to one of such mismanagements and immoral acts that are prevalent in the church of late. Pastor Gandhi’s church which is situated in Philadelphia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland is the biggest Redeemed Christian Church of God in America with a congregation of over 15,000 and the incident which occurred late last year has caused the GO serious heartache, as immorality has become the greatest problem now facing the church.

All these atrocities and many more that are happening in the church we gathered has always been giving Daddy GO serious headache and we learnt it is what makes Daddy G. O. to cry on daily basis whenever news of atrocities of his spiritual sons and daughters get to him. We learnt that Adeboye is in the habit of praying and begging God on their behalf to the extent that he hardly has time to ask God for other things.

In another development the revered man of God has explained why his nickname is tiger as well the circumstances surrounding his birth around 1942, saying that they were mysterious. According to him, he was born on a Sunday when there was rain and sunshine, while his delivery was singlehandedly handled by his mother in a room at Ifewara, Osun State, a reason he was nicknamed “the tiger.”

He gave the revelation to worshippers at the Redemption Camp, Kilometre 46, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, while giving a sermon on the topic: “Wonders of His Names.”

While speaking on the significance of names, the cleric said in the course of his growing up, he had to drop some names that he discovered were inimical to his spiritual and physical progress.

Adeboye reeled out his full names as “Enoch, Elisha, Sunday, Adejare, Adetona, Olagundoye, Adeboye, including his alias, which the people chorused as “the tiger.”

According to him, “I asked my mother when and how I was born. She said it was at a time when a certain king mounted the throne in Ilesha. And I said that was 1942. She said it was a Sunday when something was being celebrated in the church. She said she was alone in the house when she delivered me.

“She said it was a very strange Sunday because the rain was falling and the sun was shining, which is an indication in Yoruba that a tiger was being born. You may think I’m joking; ask my elder sisters, they are still alive; they will tell you one of my nicknames is the tiger. But do I look like a tiger to you now?”

Adeboye emphasised the need for children of God to revisit their names and change some, as well as add some as the case may be.

“What is your own name? Check if there is any evil one there and reject it. And if there is a good one you want, add it and my God will say Amen,” he declared.
