At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja Lagos, agents of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, foiled an attempt by a human trafficker, Mathew Bassey, to export illicit drugs to Dubai, United Arab Emirate, by concealing them in the luggage of an orphan, Ms. Peter Gift Eno, who had been hired for a fictitious job in the Arab country.
On Wednesday, July 6, Bassey, 29, of Oron LGA, Akwa Ibom state, was detained when Eno was intercepted in the airport’s departures area.
There were inconsistencies between the age Enos claimed to be and the date of birth listed on her international passport, which led to the discovery of 50 packets of cannabis (weighing 2.80kg) hidden in food items when her luggage was inspected.
In a related development, NDLEA agents who intercepted drug trafficker Aloysius Ajuruchukwu Onyekwe (also known as Kelvin) in Ibadan, Oyo state as a result of intelligence shared by the Department of State Security, DSS, foiled his desperate attempt to travel by road to Algeria through Sokoto state while carrying 47 wraps of cocaine in his stomach.
Onyekwe, 26, was detained on Sunday, July 3rd, at Ojo Park in Ibadan as he attempted to board a vehicle traveling from Sokoto to Algeria. Onyekwe is from the Owerri West LGA in Imo State.
Blessing Nwoke, an 18-year-old woman, was his traveling companion.
The 10-month-old child’s father admitted that he started his voyage to Algeria from the Cele area after passing out 47 cocaine pellets in five excretions.
Additionally in Oyo state, Mustapha Ijabula, 22, a drug dealer, was apprehended in a commercial vehicle headed for Yola, Adamawa, that was halted for a routine search on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The vehicle was found to be carrying 1,900 Tramadol 225mg tablets.
He is an Adamawa native from the Mubi region.
When a commercial boat that Fonkou Dassi boarded was stopped and searched while en route to Cameroon, officers from the Marine Unit of the Agency in Akwa Ibom state apprehended the 31-year-old trans-border trafficker with 6,000 Tramadol 225mg tablets, weighing 3kg.
The cocaine cache was hidden by the suspect inside an Indomie Noodles cartoon.
