According to officials, a six-year-old child and her parents were killed while camping in the US state of Iowa.
Sarah and Tyler Schmidt, both 42, and their daughter Lula were discovered dead in their tent at Maquoketa Caves State Park. According to a neighbor, the couple’s nine-year-old kid escaped the attack.
The suspect, a 23-year-old guy, then turned the gun on himself. His body was discovered in the park as well.
According to Mitch Mortvedt, Assistant Director of the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the Maquoketa Caves State Park is an active crime scene. Mr Mortvedt told The Des Moines Register that there had been no reportsof an earlier altercation between the suspect and victims.
Anthony Orlando Sherwin, who was also camping at the campsite, has been identified as the alleged shooter. The bodies of the deceased were discovered on Friday morning, and emergency services were notified at 06:23 a.m. local time (12:23 BST).
The park was evacuated, and Sherwin, who was known to be armed, was discovered missing. His body was discovered in the park, some distance from the campsite, after an air search. The Schmidts were from Cedar Falls, Iowa, which has also been shaken by the news.
Cedar Falls mayor Rob Green stated on Facebook that he had just finished a project with Sarah Schmidt, who worked at the local library.
“Like many of you just hearing the news, I’m devastated,” he said.
“I knew Sarah well, and she and her family were regular walkers here in the Sartori Park neighbourhood.”
