Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, is having a successful season after making her solo debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her 2020 single, “Free Mind,” from her For Broken Ears EP.
“Free Mind” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on Monday, a day after Tems appeared on the soundtrack of Marvel’s Black Panther sequel trailer, “Wakanda Forever.”
The clip, which was released on Sunday, featured Tems’ renditions of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright.”
Tems’ maiden solo single landed at No. 90, marking her fourth appearance on the coveted Billboard Hot 100 chart. Tems debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in May with her participation on American rapper Future’s “Wait For U.”
The song, which also features Canadian rapper Drake, is the sixth on Future’s most recent LP album, I Never Liked You.
Tems first appeared on the Hot 100 in October of last year, with her appearance on the “Essence” remix. Wizkid’s smash single, which also featured Justin Bieber, landed at No. 9 on the charts. Her prior chart entries came from guest performances in Drake’s “Fountain.”
Tem made history by becoming the first Nigerian female singer to win Best International Act at the BET Awards 2022 in June 2022.
The Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles hosted the 2022 award ceremony. The BET Awards honor African-American accomplishments in music, entertainment, and sports.
Fireboy, Dave from the UK, Dinos from France, Fally Ipupa from Congo, Little Simz from the UK, Ludmilla from Brazil, Major League Djz from South Africa, and Tayc from France were all beaten by the outstanding singer.
Tems, who accepted the prize, advised women and girls to stay on their chosen path, saying that their efforts would soon be rewarded.
