Yemi Alade, a popular Nigerian-born musician, and her music band were denied Canadian visas due to concerns that they would not be able to exit the country following their performance.

According to Le Devoir, a French newspaper published and syndicated in Canada, the artist will not perform at the Festival’s final closing ceremony on Sunday. The 33-year-old Afropop musician is said to be one of the Festival international Nuits d’Afrique’s headliners.

The festival’s co-founder, Suzanne Rousseau, commented on the development, saying the visa denial was due to financial considerations and concerns that the group would not leave Canada.

“Finally, we got a response that the musicians were refused, claiming they had to guarantee that they had enough financial means to return to their nation,” she explained.

As a result of Yemi’s absence, Suzanne has indicated that the singer will be replaced at the festival by Sampa The Great, a Zambian-born Australia-based singer.
