Exclusive: Why Tinubu Can’t Forgive Saraki, Amaechi

Many political observers have wondered why harmony has ceased to reign between Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the duo of Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

Once upon a time, the trio, who are big political players in the country, enjoyed a cordial relationship. However, cracks began to appear in their wall as soon as Saraki and Amaechi refused to support Tinubu’s ambition to run as the Vice President to Buhari during the build-up to the 2015 election campaigns.

Tinubu was said to have been given the privilege of nominated three Vice Presidential candidates, but the Jagaban decided to file his own name instead. Therefore, when he presented the paper during an indoor meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains, it was Saraki and Amaechi who were more vocal among those not in support of the move.

In turns, Saraki and Amaechi gave several reasons why the Buhari/Tinubu ticket should not fly, aside the fact that both of them are Muslims. Even when Tinubu cited that in 1993, the late M.K.O Abiola successfully contested and won the Presidential election with a fellow Muslim running mate, Saraki and Amaechi insisted that it worked in 1993 because Abiola had proved his mettle as a detribalised and region-friendly personality, who had done many charitable projects for Christians, Muslims and even traditional worshippers.

That was where the animosity started from, particularly as Tinubu was later informed that Amaechi and Saraki did not support him for their personal reasons. For instance, Amaechi did not support Tinubu because he was also considering the chances of becoming the VP, while Saraki on the other hand believes that Tinubu’s priority was to later become the president, a position he was also eyeing.
